2:30 am
I jumped up from my chair as if jolts of electricity coursed through my veins. It was the librarian, Ms. Bellbottom, she slammed three rather thick volumes of books regarding potion recipes. Hm, those look like a fun read. I’m surprised I haven't checked those out yet. I’ve must have fallen asleep reading up on Alchemy again--plus judging by the evidence I saw wet and dried up spots of saliva--and like always I’m the last student here. Like seriously am I the only student here that cares about his studies!? I could hear my dad’s voice in the back of my head saying “Long hours of studying doesn't mean shit if you can’t deliver results.” Eh, what the hell does he know?
“How many times have I told you not to fall asleep in here!?” she whispered angerly, her big rimmed glasses amplified the anger in her dark blue eyes.
“Sorry Ms. Bellbottom, I fell asleep reading again,” I said checking to see if I got any of the pages wet. “Y’know I’d promise that I won’t do it again but then that would be a broken promise, broken promises get you nowhere.”
Ms. Bellbottom was quiet for a moment, “...True but I just don’t want you in here wasting all your time studying. Being ahead is great and all but so is being a kid, y’know? Besides what are you reading anyway?"
In response to her question, I slowly got up to stretch before pushing in my chair and closing the book. “It’s Mordo’s Guide to Alchemy, it’s the last volume,” I say as I scan the tabletop for my quill, I mean my notes are here as well as the book.
I turned to see Ms. Bellbottom’s rosy face smiling, she had a dark grey and white feather in her hand. My quill. I blushed before gently taking it.
“It was in that curly afro of yours,” she said smiling. “But seriously, you’ve checked out that whole series a dozen times, shouldn't you be a master at this by now?”
Before I could answer her, a loud fluttering sound could be heard echoing throughout the library. Both Ms. Bellbottom and I looked around trying to see whatever it was that was making that sound. I slowly to reach for my wand just in case, I mean you can never be too safe at Hogwarts. Eventually, a familiar shiny black owl came swooping down and landed on my arm, in its beak it had a letter. No doubt about it, this was Sybil’s owl, Peppermint.
“Seriously, who gets letters at three in the morning!?” Ms. Bellbottom shrieked.
I ignored her as I thanked Peppermint for delivering the letter, giving a gentle push he flew back to where he came. Placing the letter on the table I pulled out my wand and the mouthed the word reveal in Latin. Waiting a few seconds the blank brown parchment started to convulse until a small life-like floating head of my sister appeared. It was kinda weird, it was like she was actually staring at me with those judgemental eyes.
“Sebastian,” she proceeded to say. “You will receive a silent invite and if you are truly a part of this family then you will take it. If you don't take the invite as well as join then you are dead to us. Your sister, Sybil.”
And just like that, she was gone. About a minute later I felt this tugging in my left robe pocket, it was a folded up white parchment this time. Eagerly unfolding it, it read…
Come to seek us where nature and darkness meet in an embrace.
“I’ll never understand your family,” she said. “That riddle, however, is pretty simple. It’s basically the--”
“The forbidden forest, yeah I know,” I muttered. “Well alright I guess I should be going now, apparently I have a lot to do when I wake up.
“You know you don’t have to go, right?” she asked concerned.
“And miss this possible adventure? Never.”
